Science of Reading: Our New Core Knowledge Language Arts Curriculum

We are excited to announce the adoption of the Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) curriculum in our district. This innovative program is grounded in the Science of Reading, a comprehensive, evidence-based understanding of how people learn to read.

CKLA provides systematic and explicit language arts instruction, which research has shown to be the most effective approach for teaching reading. This method ensures that all students, regardless of their background or learning style, have the opportunity to become strong, confident readers.

Key features of our new CKLA curriculum include:

1. Phonics-based instruction: Students learn to decode words using proven phonics strategies.
2. Building background knowledge: The program integrates content from various subjects, enhancing comprehension and vocabulary.
3. Explicit teaching of comprehension skills: Students learn strategies to understand and analyze texts deeply.
4. Systematic approach: Skills are taught in a logical sequence, building upon each other for maximum retention and application.

By implementing CKLA, we are ensuring that our students receive the most up-to-date, research-backed reading instruction available. This curriculum will help foster a love of reading and set our students on the path to academic success across all subjects.
